The DNR process was reviewed by several parties including a lead hospitalist and a command physician to make sure that we are following not only the wishes of patients, but also the law/protocol regarding out-of-hospital DNR orders. As of now, this will only be for stretcher patients being discharged from the hospital.
The Process for a DNR out of Butler Hospital is:
Obtain the lavender colored order from the unit
Ask the unit personal about the patient's advanced directives (Verbal Consult)
Stop at the ED and have the Command Physican sign the lavender form as a verification of the DNR
The lavender DNR order will only be for the specific trip from the hospital to the destination.
Anything other than the signed lavender form, start CPR and contact medic command for direction or any other questionable events.
Should a patient cease to breath during transport, the validated DNR is to be honored. The EMS provider will contact medic command and the deceased patient will continue to be transported to the receiving facility. The signed Lavender DNR order will need to be attached to the PCR and a Contact Medic Command intervention will need to be entered into the PCR documenting which physician validated the DNR when a patient is deceased. We will be honoring the Command validated DNR as a patient specific written order.
